Exploring house design for rural areas in Scotland

All of our self-build and home extension projects aim to create spaces that nurture people and families. In our more rural, self-build houses in the Scottish Borders, we seek to create both contrast and harmony between architecture and nature, designing bespoke homes for our clients that both embrace natural elements and transcend the natural environment. In all of our work, we strive to create buildings that feel like they have always been there, and are part of the landscape.

Our self-build architects believe in creating a sense of earthiness and connection to the land by maximising architectural elements like rural views and balconies, while our carefully considered layouts facilitate openness and ease of movement between indoor and outdoor spaces and activities.

Extensions that transform your home and enhance family life

Our domestic architects understand that family needs are constantly evolving. From Glasgow to the Borders, many homeowners feel their current home is in the right location, but just isn’t meeting their family’s needs.

At Vellow Wood, we believe that home extensions offer excellent value for money and create unique opportunities to maximise potential. Our architectural solutions prioritise design quality, allowing you to accommodate your growing family, dedicate more space to hobbies and projects, revitalise your existing living areas, and create new ones for your loved ones to enjoy. By creating comfortable and functional living spaces, our extensions enable your home life to thrive.

Design challenges and building issues we can help overcome

Our domestic architecture expertise means we’ve successfully overcome a wide variety of challenges faced by homeowners wanting to either extend their existing home or self-build a new home from scratch.

These include:

  • Creating innovative solutions to overcome confined site boundaries.
  • Designing around constrained infill plots between historic houses.
  • Securing planning permission in conservation areas, and areas with significant extension constraints.
  • Enabling alterations to listed buildings including building warrant applications.
  • Creating innovative, self-build solutions to accommodate particular needs: for example, a new farmhouse with a separate entrance and shower for a farmer, or a home with movable walls, multiple entrances and living spaces for a multi-generational family.
  • Working around building regulations constraints creatively to find solutions that maximise useability.
  • Engaging with your own ideas and preferences in a collaborative design development process that includes you to create results that fit your personal style.
  • Working with residential developers on projects like The Old Fire Station in Paisley to create domestic architecture that embraces historical references, local identity and facilitates a sense of belonging.
  • Creating sustainably focused homes that incorporate natural materials andutilise innovative, modern solutions to save energy, including energy-efficient eco-houses.
